When to go: nature month by month

Northern lights from September, cranes from November, snowmelt in May, a glacier at its best from September to April: the month decides what you will see.

  • 2 countries

The best time to visit, month by month

Twelve cards, one per month, built from the dated seasons of every page on the site, to find the best time to visit a park or a natural wonder: the phenomena you can watch, the places at their best and the hikes open that month. The 35 pages across 11 countries feed them, and each new page adds its dates.

A month card reads in three lines: a phenomenon with its place, the places whose manager or data give that month as their best, and the treks whose season is open. Below, how the months are built, the phenomena the site follows, the year in four seasons and the dates that change a trip.

Months

How to read a month

Each month card, and the full page behind it, stacks three kinds of entry taken from the pages of the site, each with the months its source gives.

  • A phenomenon and its place

Northern lights, deer rut, peak water flow, migration, bloom, breeding season, with the months read at the manager or in a dated source.

  • Hikes open this month

Every trek whose season covers the month, from the dates of its manager.

A month with many entries is the alpine summer; a month with few is one where a single place is worth the whole trip, such as the Perito Moreno Glacier from September to April.

The phenomena the site follows

Each phenomenon is dated by the body that runs the place, and the dates are shown on its page.

Phenomenon Months Where
Midnight sun 25 May to 17 July Lofoten Islands, at Svolvær
Deer rut September Swiss National Park
Peak water flow March to April Victoria Falls

The best time to visit, season by season

  • January to March

Northern lights over the Lofoten, cranes in the Landes de Gascogne, the Perito Moreno Glacier in its best months; Victoria Falls reaches its peak flow in March and April.

  • April to June

Kruger’s dry season opens in April; the snowmelt swells the Krimml Waterfalls from late May; puffins nest on the Cliffs of Moher; the midnight sun rises over the Lofoten from 25 May; the alpine passes clear from mid-June.

Closed, crowded or booked: dates that change a trip

  • Crowds

July and August on the Tour du Mont Blanc, whose refuge wardens prefer September; 205,100 climbers counted at the eighth station of Mount Fuji in 2025, in a season of ten weeks.

  • Bookings with a date

Tour du Mont Blanc huts for 2027, open since 15 October 2026; Inca Trail permits for 2026, on sale from 17 November 2025; Laugavegur huts, booked from Landmannalaugar southwards before you start.

Pick the month, then the landscape: the hikes hub sorts treks by season, the parks hub by rules and figures, and the map by region.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit national parks in Europe?

From June to October for the high trails of the Alps, where the parks open their paths as the snow goes and the Swiss National Park keeps its paths open from mid-May to mid-November. July and August are the busiest months on most alpine parks and treks; September brings quieter paths and the deer rut. Each park page carries its own month-by-month guide.

When can you see the northern lights?

From September to April on the Lofoten Islands, by the archipelago’s own figures, with no sunrise at Svolvær from 4 December to 7 January. The midnight sun takes over from 25 May to 17 July.

When is the best time to see a waterfall?

In its peak month. Victoria Falls carries the most water in March and April and about a tenth of that in November; the Krimml Waterfalls run strongest from late May to July with the snowmelt, and their path closes from November to April. The waterfalls hub lists each fall with its peak months.

When is the hiking season in the Alps?

From mid-June to mid-September on the Tour du Mont Blanc, with névés still possible in June, and from June to September on the Dolomite high routes. In Iceland the Laugavegur is open on average from 25 June to 15 September. The routes hub shows the season of every trek, and each month page lists the hikes open that month.

When is the best time to go on safari in Kruger?

The dry season, from April to September, by the park’s own guidance: vegetation thins out and water is restricted to rivers and waterholes, so animals are easier to see. From October to March the bush is dense and sightings are harder.

How are the months on this calendar decided?

From dated sources only: the months a manager gives for a phenomenon, the best period named on a page, and the opening dates of each route. A page without a dated season adds nothing to the calendar, and each entry links to the page where its source and consultation date are shown.
